Ingredients

Canned cut green beans
  • 4 can (14.5 oz) cut green beans drained
Bacon and aromatics
  • 8 slice bacon chopped
  • 0.5 small onion onion diced
Brown sugar butter sauce
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar packed
  • 0.25 cup butter melted
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Bake prep
  1. Preheat the oven to 350F for a hot bake-ready temperature. Have a 9x13-inch baking dish ready so the beans can go in immediately.
  2. Cook the chopped bacon and diced onion in a skillet for 8 minutes until the bacon is mostly crisp, without draining. Let the bacon fat and onion juices stay in the skillet for flavor.
Assemble and bake
  1. Place the drained cut green beans in a 9x13-inch baking dish, then top with the bacon, onion, and drippings. Spread into an even layer so the sauce pools around all sides.
  2. Whisk the brown sugar, melted butter, soy sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper until smooth. Pour the mixture over the beans to coat and partially submerge the tops.
  3. Cover the dish with foil and bake 35-40 minutes at 350F, stirring once during baking. Bake until the sauce turns glossy and clings to the beans.
  4. Stir and serve warm right after baking. Let it sit briefly only if the sauce is bubbling too hot to serve.

Notes

Pro tip: keep the bacon drippings (don’t drain) so the sauce gets an extra savory depth and glossy sheen. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator up to 3 days and reheat in the oven or microwave until hot. Freezing is not recommended because the green beans can soften further after thawing. If you want a lighter option, use low-sodium soy sauce and reduce the black pepper slightly to keep the flavor balanced.
