Ingredients

  • 8 bread
  • 8 deli ham
  • 8 turkey
  • 8 cheese (cheddar or Swiss)
  • 4 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 mustard and mayo (optional) Optional; add to sandwiches before grilling if desired.

Method

Prep the bread
  1. Butter one side of each bread slice. Keep the buttered side facing outward when assembling.
Assemble the sandwiches
  1. Build sandwiches with butter-side out: bread, cheese, ham, turkey, cheese, bread. If using, add mustard and mayo between layers before closing the sandwich.
Grill over the campfire grate
  1. Place sandwiches on campfire grate over medium heat. Grill for 4-5 minutes per side until the bread is golden and the cheese melts.
Finish and serve
  1. Remove from heat, cut in half, and serve hot. The melted interior should pull slightly when sliced.

Notes

Pro tip: Keep the heat on medium so the bread toasts before the cheese finishes melting. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container for up to 2 days; reheat in a skillet over medium-low until warm and melty. Freezing isn’t recommended because grilled bread can lose texture. For a lower-fat swap, use reduced-fat cheese and light deli ham/turkey.
